Columbia College Students Raising Awareness

“Torture: A Lasting Impression”
Hosted by The Columbia College  – Amnesty International Chapter

Walt Whitman: A rehearsal and performance space
1278 N. Milwaukee Avenue

Friday May 1.
7 p.m. – 11p.m.

“Torture: A Lasting Impression” is an art exhibition. The exhibition focuses on the effects of torture in our contemporary world, utilizing artists and students as a medium to portray the degrading consequences of torture on society. Lent from a private collection, the main art piece on display is by renowned international artist Hani Mazhar, an Iraqi-born artist with solo exhibitions in many galleries across the world in the last 20 years.

This student-run exhibition focuses on how detention institutions such as Guantánamo Bay and concurrent torture techniques cripple our societal capacity of moving towards resolving conflict. Through predominately student performances, including modern dance, music, spoken word and most of all visual art, the group hosting this event hopes to raise awareness on the needed accountability for torture and create a substantial donation towards Amnesty International campaign on torture.

In addition, there will be complimentary hors’doeuvres and light refreshments along with student performances and live entertainment from 10 p.m.– 11 p.m.

Walt Whitman Recommends

Hi There!

I am here today to let you know (or remind you if already know) about an upcoming show that is NOT TO MISS!

You Are Here by Margot Bordelon
April 19th & 20th @ 7:30pm
Victory Garden Biograph Theatre

“Last fall I dropped everything to spend three months breaking out of my liberal bubble and exploring the country at a politically charged time. I documented my journey with digital audio, photography, and video and have shaped the material into a multimedia story that debuts at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre on April 19th and 20th.”

Reviews of past performances by Bordelon:
[Love, Valor & Technology] Named “Top 5 Solo Shows of 2007″
-NewCity Chicago

“Bordelon…is in total command of her airtight material. She also is pretty, funny, observant, fast-talking and knowingly sexy — with a 1950s girl-next-door allure that disguises a mischievous, naughty-girl persona. Highly recommended”
-Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun Times

Many of you know Margot from Theatre Seven of Chicago, or Serendipity Theatre Collective’s 2nd Story or Around the Coyote or Collaboraction or Lookingglass or Steppenwolf – the list goes on and on. I have included you in this email about “You Are Here” because you have either come to shows I have recommended in the past or because you know Margot personally and I am 100% confident you are going to enjoy this. All the info is below and a discount code for $5 off when you purchase your ticket ahead of time.

See you at The Biograph,

Cassy
